Report: Carson Wentz wants out if he's not the Eagles' long-term starter over Jalen Hurts

If Carson Wentz truly wants out of Philadelphia if the Eagles were to name Jalen Hurts the starting quarterback going forward, he hasn't done himself any favors from an ESPN report.

The report Sunday morning said Wentz is "not pleased with the way events have unfolded in the organization."

The report, citing unnamed sources, makes it seem like Wentz would try to force a trade if Hurts is named the starter in 2021 rather than serving as his backup. Hurts was the Eagles' second-round draft pick last spring.

Wentz was benched in the third quarter of the Eagles' 30-16 loss to Green Bay on Dec. 3.

Eagles' Carson Wentz (11) is tackled by Seahawks' Quandre Diggs (37) Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 in Philadelphia. Seahawks won 23-17.

Hurts started the next game, a 24-21 win over New Orleans, which ended the Eagles' four-game losing streak. Head coach Doug Pederson waited until the next day to say that Hurts would start the game Sunday against Arizona.

Pederson has not named a starter for the rest of the season, although an NFL Network report Sunday said that Hurts would be the starter going forward.

That would imply that Wentz would have a chance during the spring practices to win his job back.

When asked about the report after the Eagles' 33-26 loss to Arizona on Sunday, Pederson said: "Carson has done everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s a pro. He’s engaging, he’s helping Jalen, and so he’s doing everything that we’re asking him to do. I get it. I understand that it’s a frustrating situation, probably, for him, but at the same time, I also see him helping Jalen and helping our offense, and that’s what he’s doing during these games.

"I don’t know much about the other stuff," referring to the report.

Wentz is having by far the worst season of his career. He's among the worst quarterbacks in terms of completion percentage (57.4) and passer rating (72.8). He has also thrown the most interceptions (15) and been sacked the most times (50).

It would be difficult for the Eagles to trade or release Wentz after the season.

Releasing Wentz would cost the Eagles $59.2 million in dead money on their salary cap, which they could spread out over two seasons.

The Eagles are already projected to be at least $70 million over the cap heading into 2021. So releasing Wentz would add another $25 million to that. And by trading Wentz, the Eagles would take a $34 million cap charge for him to resurrect his career elsewhere.

That means it's more than likely that Wentz will be back in 2021. It's also likely that Wentz will have to compete with Hurts if he wants his job back, whether he likes it or not.
