The Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company said one of its members was killed while on the scene of a vehicle crash Friday afternoon.

Laura Madara, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, died after sustaining injuries she suffered in a "department crash," according to a statement posted to the fire company's Facebook page.

Delaware State Police said Saturday morning that the 56-year-old woman was struck by a Selbyville Fire Police truck that was "being utilized to assist with traffic control while on scene for a separate motor vehicle crash."

As the scene was cleared, the truck, being operated by a 79-year-old Selbyville man, reversed into Madara. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

"We ask that you keep the Madara Family, the Selbyville Fire Company and all of those that loved Laura in your thoughts and prayers," read a Friday night post from the fire company that announced Madara's death.

Polly Branch Road was closed for around two hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.

Hundreds of people had commented or shared the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company post announcing Madara's death.

"So sad to hear this news," one person wrote. "Laura will be so missed. A great woman who has volunteered to help others throughout her career and in retirement. Praying for her family, friends and co-workers."
